Product Review--Curls Goddess Curls

Curls--Goddess Curls
            $8 at Target

Ingredients: water, sorbitol, polyacrylate-14, polyquaternium-7, polysorbate 20, fruit certified organic mangifera indica (mango) seed butter, plumeria alba flower extract, biosaccharide gum-1, carbomer, certified organic butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), aloe barbadensis leaf juice, aminomethyl propanol, tetrasodium EDTA, phenoxyethanol, DMDM hydantoin

Review: "Botanical curl gel to define, defrizz and hold curls"
I really do like this gel.  Normally I don't use alot of gels, but this one is very light and it does not cause my hair to flake.   It gives a medium to strong hold, but does not leave my hair crunchy.  My curls were definitely defined with no frizz.  I section my hair (to distribute product evenly to my thick hair) while it's soaking wet and shingle through.  ***I use a spray bottle to rewet any dry spots before applying the gel. After applying the product thoroughly, I do not touch my hair.  This eliminates frizz!

I have not tried this alone, but I use over a leave in.  The leave in that I'm currently using is Oyin handmade--Hair Dew.  I will do a review for that one later.  My only con would be that it's a bit thin, so I have to use a lot at once to feel like anything is going on my hair (Probably 2-4 pumps per section).  Also, it has no smell, but that doesn't bother me.  Usually I like products that smell sweet, but my leave in smells like cookies, so it makes up for it. I would purchase this product again because, I like the price and when I use this gel I get tons of compliments on my hair! :)

Product Review for Curls--Lavish Curls Moisturizer

Post image for Curls Lavish Curls Moisturizer

Curls--Lavish Curls Moisturizer
            $10 at Target

Ingredients: water, glycerin, polysorbate 80, methylheptyl isostearate, silk amino acids, certified organic anthemis nobilis flower extract, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, certified organic camelllia sinensis leaf extract, citric acid, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, disodium EDTA, potassium sorbate, phenoxyethanol, caprylyl glycol, fragrance

Review: I received this product through a swap from one of my friends.  I love this spray! It's great on second day hair and it literally SAVES a bad hair day.  Has tons of slip!!! It's very moisturizing, lightweight, and non greasy.  It has a pleasant fruity smell.  The only con about this spray is the way it squirts out.  It squirts out in a straight stream, so it's hard to spray alot of hair at once.  It's kind of weird lol! I use this by itself, but I want to try this underneath of the curls souffle' to see how it turns out.  I have used it on dry and damp hair and get great results with both.

Frugal Hair Products

Love this list of frugal hair products that compare to the really expensive ones.  I will be trying Silk Elements mixed silk for $6.00 to see if it is as good as the mixed chicks brand.  The mixed chicks leave in is currently one of my staples, but I can't see myself paying $20.00 again.

Caramel Treatment

I really want to start mixing up my own deep treatments. I was researching ways to elongate your curls, so that there is less shrinkage.  I found a great recipe for a natural hair softener and stretcher.
http://www.blackhairinformation.com/hair-treatments-and-recipes/the-caramel-treatment-a-natural-hair-softener/

The ingredients:
Honey – An excellent humectant good for moisture
Olive Oil – For lubrication and helps with moisture retention
Bananas – Good for moisture and some protein benefits as well
Molasses (Treacle) – Another excellent humectant with some protein benefits
Water – This is the best natural moisturizer and is used to thin the mixture
Apple Cider Vinegar – For the shine it imparts to the hair
Cornstarch – For thickening purposes
Wheat germ oil – For added strength and lubrication

The recipe:
Honey – 6 tablespoons
Olive Oil – 6 tablespoons
Bananas – 2-3 overripe and very soft
Molasses (Treacle) – 3 tablespoons
Water – 4-6 tablespoons
Apple Cider Vinegar – 1 tablespoon
Cornstarch – 1-2 tablespoons depending on how thick you want the mixture to be
Wheat germ oil – 1 teaspoon – This can be substituted for any other natural oil of your choice
• Place all the ingredients except for the water into a blender and process until smooth. You may need to add the water bit by bit if it looks too dry.
• To ensure that there are no bits of banana in the mixture, sieve it through a fine sieve.
• Pour the mixture into a saucepan and put it on a medium heat while stirring constantly. You don’t want to ‘cook’ the mixture but you want the cornstarch to cause it to thicken and this will take just moments. You may need to add more water to thin it down if it gets too thick or add a bit more cornstarch if it is still too runny. You want to end up with a caramel coloured mixture that is the consistency of a thick batter. If the mixture is too thin it will start dripping from your hair as soon as you apply it.
• Decant the mixture into a container, depending on the length of your hair it will likely be enough for two applications.
To apply, divide the hair into 3-4 sections and clip. Starting with 1 section, part the hair and apply on the roots generously rubbing in with your fingers. Once applied on the roots of the section, apply the mixture all the way to the ends. Complete all sections in this manner and once done, cover the hair with a plastic cap. Let the mixture sit in your hair for 1-2 hours or overnight for really dry hair.
Wash hair with a sulfate free shampoo, deep condition and style as usual. You can freeze the remainder until you are ready to use it. The treatment is suitable for both natural and relaxed hair.

Recipe for Soft Hair

Deep treatment that I found online today.  I'm going to try this over the weekend!

Use 1/4 cup of olive oil and 1/2 cup of honey – Spread the mixture all over your head and cover with a shower cap/plastic bag, then leave on for 30 minutes and then rinse for soft hair.

I'll let you know how it goes!

To Henna or Not to Henna?

Today I have hair color on my mind.  I really don't want to put harsh chemicals on my hair, so I'm thinking about doing a henna treatment.  My hair looks a little dry and dull right now and the curls are blended together.  I have been researching and henna is supposed to make your hair shiny and improve the overall health of your hair.  The only bad thing is henna might loosen your curl pattern.  It varies with curl pattern and it's not supposed to be too drastic, but I need to do more research before I decide.

This website has some very helpful information on henna:

Hair Care Regimen

Today I have been thinking alot about hair care regimens.  I came across the afroveda website and thought it was interesting.
http://www.afroveda.com/category_s/169.htm

Since I did the BC I have been playing around with different products and I'm still trying to figure out my hair care regimen.  My regimen has been cowash everyday for a week, then add leave in conditioner,  seal with oil and then put creme gel on top for a soft hold. I shampoo 1-2 times a week depending on the weather or how much I sweat and I deep condition when I shampoo.  I would WNG for about a week and then do a twist out and keep it in for 3-5 days and then start over with my WNG.

With fall approaching and the weather changing, my regimen is now going to change.  I will be doing more twist outs and hopefully get better at it.  My twist out didn't turn out so good today, but I didn't start off with clean hair.

Dressing up your TWA

One concern many women have before doing the BC  is the TWA (teeny weeny afro) phase.  Trust me I understand.  At first I wanted to be a long term transitioner (1.5-2yrs) because I have never  had short hair.  I changed my mind! Now I am embracing this change. I don't worry about that anymore! There are 5 different ways to dress up your twa and still look fabulous!
Accessorize- Hair accessories will become your best friend. You can get anything from hair clips, half hats, scarves to head bands and bandannas; Feathers are in this summer and are great for a casual jean and t-shirt look or a more glamorous night on the town. Spice up your TWA with any of the accessories and you can show off your creative side and look glamorous at the same time.
Experiment with different styles- Depending on the length of your twa, you can play around with twists, braids, twist-outs, and braid-outs. This will add pizazz to your cropped do. I found that twist-outs work best for me.  You can twist or braid your hair at night and take it out the next day. It usually enlogates the hair and lasts for a couple more days. Twists and braids are also great protective styles and helps hold in moisture.
Jewelry- Earrings brighten up your face. They are pretty much a necessity with short hair. Your earrings do not have to be huge! You can wear something simple and cute.  I wear both studs and bigger earrings, but it just depends on what mood I’m in and what I’m wearing.  Earrings are another way to express your creativity and style.
Makeup- Since your hair is short, make-up is going to really pop. So pull out that fancy eye shadow that you save for special occasions. When rocking a twa, everyday should be dramatic. Line your eyelids with a dramatic liners. Dress up your eye lashes with mascara. Try a bold lip color! Make it fierce and own it!

Have Confidence ladies- This is very important. If you don’t think your natural twa is fabulous and don’t exude confidence it will be hard for others to appreciate it.  You have to love it before anyone else does.  It might take some getting used to at first, but work it! Your twa is already looking great with its own unique flare!  Embrace the change!

LOIS Hair System

Since my big chop on August 6th, I have been wondering what curl pattern and type of hair I have.  Check out the Lois Hair System. I think I am a daughter of O and S with a spongy texture!  What do you think your hair type is? Please let me know if you think my hair is something else because I'm not quite sure yet.  It is so much fun to research and learn about my natural hair texture! It is important to learn what hair type you have, so you can research good products to keep your hair healthy and happy.

Also check out this hair type chart with different curl patterns.  I think that I have some 3b in the front and 3c in the back and middle.  There is also probably some 4a/mixed in there:).
